Mexican Government Hires Lawyer to Watch over Child Custody Case
Staff Writer, May 21, 2009
The Mexican government has recently taken an interest in a child custody battle over a severely brain-damaged four-year-old girl, which is taking place in Nashville, Tennessee. The girl’s mother is an illegal immigrant to the United States, but the girl herself is an American citizen, having been born in Nashville.
After a medical mishap at the age of three, the girl was left with severe brain trauma. Her mother has been attempting to sue the Vanderbilt University Medical Center for a puncture in one of the girl’s artery, which caused massive internal bleeding and damage. However, the doctor argues that severe complications from a serious illness are to blame.
Because the mother was arrested on a drug charge, a nurse from Nashville was granted custody of the child. The mother, however, regained custody after the charges were dismissed. Now, a battle has begun between the mother and the nurse. Immigration officials have allowed the woman to stay in the country because of her pending court cases- both malpractice and child custody. Her lawyers are also trying to get permission for her to legally work while her court battles drag on.
