Grandparent Visitation Laws

In the past, custody courts focused primarily on determining the rights of the mother and father in terms of caring for, making decisions for, supporting, and visiting the child at the center of a custody case. Today, however, more non-parents are getting their day in custody court when it comes to seeking visitation rights. Many states have now enacted some form of grandparent visitation laws that grant grandmas and grandpas the right to spend time with their grandchild in the aftermath of a divorce. If you are a grandparent who feels that your ability to continue your relationship with your grandchild may be limited by a vindictive or otherwise uncooperative custodial parent, you may be able to secure legal visitation rights in custody court. Talk to a representative of your local custody court to find out more about the rules that apply in your state and to initiate the petition process.
