I was a care taker of a child for many years. My service is no longer needed. Can I still have visitation rights?
I have been living with a woman and raising her daughter as my own for the past five years. I’m separating form the woman, but I would really like to maintain some ties to the daughter. In fact, since I’ve been taking care of the kid and paying for everything, I feel like I should be able to at least get some kind of formal visitation or joint custody. Can I do that?

While you may be able to work out visitation as part of a private agreement with the mother, most states will not protect your legal rights and/or grant you custody of the child unless you have a legal or biological relationship with the child. If you had formally adopted the child, you would have potential custody rights, however you did not indicate that you did so. You may wish to speak with a family law attorney to discuss any options that you might have for obtaining visitation rights.
