Crist Considers Gay Adoption in Florida
July 29, 2009
The governor of Florida, Charlie Crist, who is now a candidate for U.S. Senate, was recently seen softening his stance on gay adoption. Currently, Florida is the only state in the U.S., which has an outright ban on gay adoption. In the past, Crist has supported this ban. However, in light of his tour to promote adoption, he seems to be more accepting of the idea.
Crist was severely criticized by several civil rights groups for advocating adoption, but being so vehemently opposed to adoption for gay couples or single parents. However, this morning, he says that it would be the responsibility of the state legislature to change the ban, which was put in place in 1977. He was also asked if he would support the effort, to which he replied that he would have to think about it.
A recent survey found that most Floridians support gay adoption, even if they do not necessarily support gay marriage.
